Official FBR$749.00 /month
After countable income vs $1,029 FBR
Was this useful?
Short answer: 2027 SSI has no single “income limit.” SSA subtracts countable income from the federal maximum of $1,029 (individual) or $1,544 (couple). Countable income uses a $20 general exclusion and a $65 earned exclusion plus half of remaining wages. Students under 22 can also use the 2027 Student EIE of up to $2,500/month and $10,080/year.
How 2027 SSI countable income works
SSI is a needs-based program. After exclusions, whatever countable income remains is subtracted from the federal benefit rate (FBR). With the official 3.6% COLA, the 2027 FBR is $1,029 for an eligible individual and $1,544 for an eligible couple.
| Rule | 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Federal max, individual | $994 | $1,029 |
| Federal max, couple | $1,491 | $1,544 |
| Student EIE, monthly | $2,410 | $2,500 |
| Student EIE, yearly | $9,730 | $10,080 |
| Resource limit, individual / couple | $2,000 / $3,000 | $2,000 / $3,000 |
Exclusions applied in order
- Student Earned Income Exclusion (if eligible): up to $2,500 of this month’s wages, until the $10,080 yearly cap is used.
- $20 general exclusion against unearned income first, then any leftover against earned income.
- $65 earned-income exclusion, then half of remaining earned income.
This page is federal-only. State supplements and living-arrangement reductions are not modeled. SSI work rules are not the same as SSDI (no trial work period on SSI).
2027 SSI resource limits
Countable resources must stay at or under $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. Those caps are set in law and do not rise with the COLA.
